i'll have what she's having {6 spring shoe trends}

As I mentioned here in my last post, flats and lower heels are making a comeback in my daily uniform, where I find myself grabbing them more often than not over my heels. The ironic thing about that? I usually find myself a bit stumped actually on how to style them. I know, I know. But when your automatic knee-jerk reaction to most outfits is to "throw on heels" (which don't get me wrong, is still my mantra), flats can feel like a stranger to the rest of your wardrobe rotation.

So naturally, when DSW asked me to put together a few style boards around some of the latest shoe trends (a lot of which are flats and low heels), I jumped at the chance, mainly to familiarize myself with how I could pull off each look with similar items I likely already have in my closet. Here are 6 spring shoe trend looks I've put together (some flats, some lower heels) -- essentially a cheat sheet for you and me so to speak. And the cherry on top? I think this may have just nudged me to get a pair of Birkenstocks. Or two. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little excited to style those bad boys now.

Spring Shoe Trend: Birkenstocks

Spring Shoe Trend: Fashion Sneaker

Spring Shoe Trends: Embellished Sandal

Spring Shoe Trend: Wedges

Spring Shoe Trend: City Heel

Spring Trends: White Heels

How would you style any of these shoe trends? Let me know in the comments and make sure to check out DSW's Reward page to get in on some the latest deals and sales.

new appreciation

Blazer: Ted Baker; Shirt: Amour Vert; Jeans: J.Crew; Shoes: Miu Miu; Sunglasses: YSL; Necklaces: Jennifer Zeuner

Lately, I've had a new appreciation for flats. Don't get me wrong, I love a good bold heel, but my work schedule between the office and lots of on-site photo shoots has pretty much demanded mobility these days. I recently picked up a few pairs (including these slip on sneakers I shared here) that have been on heavy rotation ever since. Aside from the period I wore my Birkenstocks to death in middle school, I don't think my feet have ever been happier. And those Birkenstocks were pretty darn comfy.

salud! {happy cinco de mayo}

Sure. It's Monday. But hey, at least Cinco de Mayo gives us a little excuse to sneak out early, kick our feet up and extend the weekend just a bit longer! While margaritas are the obvious drink of choice today, I love this simple twist I stole from my guy's dad that just requires a splash of Grand Marnier. We opted to give it a spin this weekend and spent a leisurely afternoon sunning ourselves out on the patio. Summertime siestas truly are a godsend, no?

Cadillac Margarita
1 1/2 oz. tequila
1 oz. Grand Marnier
1/4 oz. agave nectar
3/4 oz. fresh squeezed lime juice
an extra lime or two for garnish
salt for rim

Add tequila, agave nectar, some ice and lime juice (we opted to squeeze ours) and shake well. Bonus points for shaking to the beat of a little fiesta music. Take a chilled glass and run a lime wedge along the lip. Dip the glass into some salt (either in a bowl or on a plate) and spin until desired coverage. Add ice cubes and strain drink mixture into glass. Finally, swirl in Grand Marnier on top, throw on your lime wedge for garnish and bottoms up!

link love {friday distractions}

All I can say is -- TGIF! This week sure did a number on me so I'm looking forward to some serious R&R this weekend. Ironically enough though, whenever I say that (as my boyfriend is probably thinking to himself while reading this), I usually end up planning the heck out of the weekend. Case in point: if you asked me on Tuesday what I wanted to be doing this Saturday, I'd probably tell you: bike riding, hiking, making brunch, napping at the beach, and going on a road trip all before dinner and drinks.

This weekend though, I'm going to make a very conscious effort to just relax. Of course, in the amount of time it took me to write that sentence, I already thought of five other things I wanted to jam into my little Saturday and Sunday. Ah, three day weekends, when will you become the norm?

1. My girl crush on Taylor Tomasi Hill knows no bounds. Especially after this feature she did with Zara. PS -- I'm not sure how I didn't realize this sooner, but apparently she's started her own floral business? #SignMeUp
3. If you're in need of a pick me up right now, check out this kid belting "Drunk in Love." I dare you to NOT be in a good mood afterward.
5. What to scoop up from the Kate Moss X Topshop collection. I'm eyeing the silk pajama set.
6. I love covers of men's songs sun by women. This version of "All Shook Up" is just too good.
7. Move over #Selfies. It's all about the #Shelfie now
8. All hail the bob! The 21 best bobs of all time. From Coco to Elizabeth Taylor.

this & that

A sneak peek of an outfit I'll be sharing next week -- stay tuned!

It's been a little while since I've shared a "this & that" post and I just realized how much I missed shooting and capturing these little moments. Here are a few things in and around my life that have been inspiring me lately.

I'm usually a creature of habit when it comes to flowers around our apartment (hello white hydrangeas), but these tulips are just too fitting with May finally here, no?

We recently got a new dresser (finally!), which I shared here on Instagram. Since then, I've been organizing (and reorganizing) my accessory trays that sit on display on top. Clearly, I need a few ring holders.

This is Elvis' best "please-share-your-avocado-toast-with-me" face. And I give in every time.
Update: Thanks for your comments and emails about this! I had no idea avocados were toxic for dogs! Definitely not sharing with him anymore!

A perfect summery print I can't wait to wear with all this 80 degree weather San Francisco has been experiencing!

i'll have what she's having {mother's day gift guide}

My mom usually heads out to San Francisco each August for a week-long visit and I jump at the chance to play tourist with her around town. Generally during her visits, I get ideas for her next Mother's Day gift (because it's usually something she ends up borrowing, ahem, stealing, from me during her stay). Last year it was my sunglasses, the year before that, some wedge mules and a tote bag. This year, well, I'm not going to ruin the surprise just yet, Mom, you'll have to wait and see!

What are you getting for your mom this Mother's Day?

american dream

Sweater: Givenchy; Skirt: H&M (similar style here); Shoes: Christian Louboutin; Bag: Proenza Schouler via The RealReal; Sunglasses: Coach; Bracelet: Vita Fede; Rings: Alexa Leigh, Jennifer Zeuner, The One I Love NYC

I wore this outfit this past Sunday for a day of wandering around the de Young Museum to see the Georgia O'Keeffe exhibit with a few girlfriends. As someone who's always admired O'Keeffe's work, I was surprised to realize how little I really knew about her as an artist or as a person. One quote in particular from the exhibit really stuck with me afterward:

"I've been absolutely terrified every moment of my life and I've never let it keep me from doing a single thing that I wanted to do."

With that, I hope you'll be terrified today and that it will push you to do something you wouldn't normally do. And I'll do the same.

spring update {with ted baker}

Jacket: Ted Baker; Sweater: Ted Baker; Jeans: Ted Baker; Shoes: Christian Louboutin; Clutch: Ted Baker; Sunglasses: Chloe; Bracelets: Vita Fede

As I mentioned a few weeks back, my daily routine (at least Monday through Friday) relies pretty heavily on a few key players: first, a pair of great fitting jeans, second, bold heels (obvi), and lastly, a statement jacket or blazer. So naturally, when Ted Baker asked me to style a few pieces from their SS14 collection, this floral moto jacket and these distressed jeans caught my eye instantly. (And the fact that this jacket is made out of a neoprene material certainly didn't hurt its case either.) As someone who needs her closet MVPs to go the extra mile -- I love how this jacket adds just the right amount of fresh air to my spring uniform. It's just so cheery!

Looking to update your spring uniform too? Enter to win a $500 shopping spree from Ted Baker right here! Good luck!

link love {friday distractions}

I don't know about you, but I often need a little distraction at work. It usually hits around 2 or 3 pm, my morning caffeine has long since worn off and it's home stretch for the last few meetings of the day. What happens next is a rambling internet rabbit hole for about 5-10 minutes and before I know it, I've got my second wind! (Let's just not tell my boss, OK?)

For that reason, I've been meaning to start this series for a while now here on the blog. Granted, you're all familiar with link round ups, but that's the beauty of them, right? Everyone finds something just a little different. Ya never know what you're gonna get.

Here are a few things taking up tab space in my browser lately...

1. Ever wonder what a certain meal from an iconic book might have looked like? Now you know. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is pretty spot on. Me thinks I may have to get this for the coffee table ASAP.
2. As mentioned here, my wanderlust is getting out of control these days. This round up of way-out-there hotels is making me want to go way out there.
3. The hunt for the perfect striped tee is over
4. I was recently introduced to the painfully cool LA-based jewelry line, Mason Stanley. And. I'm. Obsessed.
5. My weekend agenda? Checking out a few of the films playing at the San Francisco International Film Festival this weekend
8. Speaking of "pretty" -- how insane is this new Cinderella-esque surgery craze?
9. When terrible movies happen to funny actresses. I can't say I've seen The Other Woman but this writer does point out some all too common traits among female-centered comedies. What do you guys think?

lost in {transition}

Jacket: Alexander McQueen (similar style here); Top: White House Black Market; Pants: White House Black Market; Shoes: Schutz; Bag: Proenza Schouler; Sunglasses: Chloe (on sale!); Lips: Stila "Beso"; Umbrella: Pasotti

I've always been notorious for jumping the gun, especially when it comes to transitional dressing. Just ask my mom. I was that kid, eagerly waiting to sport all my new tank tops and shorts the minute winter weather seemed to be waning. And I usually regretted it by mid-day, wishing I had a few of my warmer layers with me to wrap up in.

Granted, I like to think I'm much wiser now (or just got tired of freezing) and have, in my humble opinion, mastered a few layering tricks that come in handy for the awkward in between seasons. Especially in San Francisco, where it's pretty common to wake up to blue, sunny skies and return after work to fog, harsh winds and surprise showers. Go figure.

This time around, I've partnered with White House Black Market to show just how you can blend your new spring pieces with the trusty autumn/winter staples you already have in rotation and still look put together. It's all about balance really. While these slouchy printed pants will be my go-tos for beach walks later this season, the leather jacket toughens it up, making it instantly street ready (and warm). Silk tops (like the one here) are always MVPs in my closet, but during these months, I'll usually make a point to add a layering tank underneath, just to ensure a little extra insulation (for when they crank up the AC at work!).

I'm curious -- how do you guys dress for this in between season we're in? Any closet staples you rely on? Would love to hear -- let me know in the comments below!

i'll have what she's having...

I don't know about you, but we have quite a few weddings and baby shower invites pouring in already, which can mean only one thing: shopping around for just the right dress for the occasion. Personally, when it comes to purchases like this, I want to make sure I can wear it well after the fact, be it for work, cocktails or date night. Here are a few contenders I have on my radar, especially that off the shoulder Carven dress, which might just be the equivalent of this cut-out Carven dress from last summer (remember when I romped around Central Park in it here?).

wanderlust {playlist}

Ever since returning from our Grand Canyon excursion a few weeks back, I've been itching to pack up my bags and hit the road again. Luckily, a few trips are in the works that should keep my wanderlust at bay...in the meantime, here are a few tunes that I've had on repeat -- perfect for road trips, weekend getaways and time-zone hopping.

sunset chasing

Dress: T by Alexander Wang (love this slip dress); Cardigan: Everlane; Shoes: Sigerson Morrison; Necklaces: Anthropologie double pearl collar necklace, Jennifer Zeuner; Bracelets: Vita Fede; Rings: The One I Love NYC, Alexa Leigh, Katie Dean, Jennifer Zeuner; Sunglasses: Chloe

This weekend was one for the books. We managed to fit in a whole day of wine tasting and general romping around in Napa for my friend Heather's birthday, a beach bonfire (which was a first for me!), Easter dinner with family and friends and this epic sunset off Highway 1. It's easy to get caught up in the day to day, week over week, but weekends like this one remind me just how incredibly thankful I am for everything I have in my life.

As for this dress? Well I have to say I can definitely get behind this whole 90s slip dress trend going on. Especially with a slouchy cardigan shrugged ever so slightly off your shoulders. Speaking of, this cardigan from Everlane (which is quickly becoming my go to for all my basics) has pretty much been my weekend layer MVP as of late. a san francisco anniversary {eat + drink guide}

Four! 4! IV! It's been four years since I packed up my little Honda Civic full of garbage bags (the only space-friendly way to move a wardrobe if you ask me) and moved to San Francisco. As cliche as it sounds, it's seriously gone by in the blink of an eye. I still remember frantically searching for my first apartment, being blown away by how much said apartment would cost, miserably attempting my first parallel park on one hell of a steep hill and despite it all, generally being amazed by just how awesome this city is.

If you recall, I shared a few of my favorite shopping haunts in this post last year. Since I often get emails from a few of you asking for restaurant and bar recommendations, I figured this little milestone anniversary of mine would be the perfect opportunity to keep my San Francisco Treat series going...

So without further adieu...

eat:
State Bird -- It's tricky to get reservations here, but it's well worth the wait! Go hungry -- dim sum style and it's hard to pass on the plates that go by. We went for my birthday and I was still stuffed the following day.
Rich Table -- Two words for you. Porcini doughnuts.
Skool -- I recently discovered this gem, thanks to a coworker's tip. Really fresh seafood -- scoot over there now before the reservation list is months out!
A16 -- I love the ambiance of this place almost as much as I love the food. I live for their burrata.
Jane -- Just right up the street from us, I can always rely on Jane. Coffee. Pastries. A hearty salad. A great place to set up shop and work on the weekend.
Domo -- One of the first restaurants I stumbled upon when I first moved to San Francisco. It's a tiny little sushi place but the line out the door moves fast, so don't worry.
Pizzeria Delfina -- It gets a lot of hype. And it lives up to it.
SPQR -- Also right around the corner from us, SPQR knows how to serve a mean truffle plate.
Foreign Cinema -- Dinner and a movie? At the same time? Count me in.

drink:
Trick Dog -- My friend Natalie recently introduced me to this bar. I love places that have a kitschy drink menu so of course I loved their astrology chart drink lineup.
Absinthe -- My old apartment was just down the street from Absinthe and I used to love stopping by on Fridays after a long work week for one of their Manhattans and a cheese platter. It's also usually filled with the post-Opera/Symphony crowd so it has a great "old San Francisco" feel.
Chambers -- Set up in an old, restored mod-hotel, Chambers is great for happy hour drinks and get togethers with girlfriends. If you catch them on an unusually warm day, stop by and enjoy their pool-side patio.
Top of the Mark -- While this is actually a restaurant, I think I've always gone here for just drinks and dancing. There's a 90% chance you'll be the among the youngest patrons there, but those types of places, personally, tend to be my favorite. And since it's on the top of the Mark Hopkins hotel, the views are unbeatable.
The Tonga Room -- Perfect for large groups and for even rowdier nights. Beware the punch bowl!
